Improving Speech Fluency in French through Psycholinguistic Principles

چکیده

A central aspect of speech fluency in a foreign language is natural phrasing (word grouping). It is often assumed that syntactic principles predict phrasing adequately. This point of view is contradicted by an extensive body of psycholinguistic experimentation. A timing model was developed based on psycholinguistic evidence [Zellner, B. (1996). Structures temporelles et structures prosodiques en frangais lu. "Revue francaise de linguistique appliquee", vol I-1], and was compared to syntactic and phonological models. Assessments of the various models favor the psycholinguistic point of view. This model showed a high correlation between synthesized and natural speech with respect to measures of syllabic duration and grouping words.

Researching (Non) Fluent L2 Speakers’ Oral Communication Deficiencies: A Psycholinguistic Perspective

Fluency in a second language (L2) involves a quintessentially cognitive processing system that operates quickly and effectively. The perceived importance of researching fluency through a psycholinguistic lens has motivated the related L2 research to resort to current cognitive speaking-specific models. This study, drawing on Levelt’s (1999a) psycholinguistic model, probed the deficiency sources...

The effect of oral repetition on L2 speech fluency: an experimental tool and language tutor

This paper discusses the effects of oral repetition and practice in improving speech fluency for adult second language acquisition. The experiment examined the impact of practice on fluency in learning Japanese as a second language. The measures included read-aloud time and speech production time during sentence rehearsal. The results indicated gradual improvement of speech fluency as the numbe...

Let's All Speak Together! Exploring the Impact of Various Languages on the Comprehension of Speech in Multi-Linguistic Babble

Our research aims at exploring psycholinguistic processes implicated in the speech-in-speech situation. Our studies focused on the interferences observed during speech-in-speech comprehension. Our goal is to clarify if interferences exist only on an acoustical level or if there are clear psycholinguistic interferences. In 3 experiments, we used 4 talkers cocktail-party signals using different w...

Developing a Semantic Similarity Judgment Test for Persian Action Verbs and Non-action Nouns in Patients With Brain Injury and Determining its Content Validity

Objective: Brain trauma evidences suggest that the two grammatical categories of noun and verb are processed in different regions of the brain due to differences in the complexity of grammatical and semantic information processing. Studies have shown that the verbs belonging to different semantic categories lead to neural activity in different areas of the brain, and action verb processing is r...
